Power in a Word

Positive or negative, our words or lack of words speak loudly. How many times have you and I missed opportunities because we held on to our words? How about those times we wished that we could have taken our words back? In Ecclesiastes we are told that God has given us a time for everything. As we communicate with God, He will give us the wisdom on not only when to speak and when to hold our tongue, but how to communicate as well.

Ecclesiastes 3:7 (NIV)

7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,

Proverbs 15:1-2 (NIV)

1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.

Blinker

The blinker lights on the dashboard of my motorcycle are out, which makes it difficult to know when they are on or off. However, I have noticed that I can see the reflection of the blinker not only in the back of the head light but also in the trim around the windshield. Where do you see the reflection of God? If we all are created in His image, shouldn’t we see His image in all people? My mom would challenge me to look for the good in all people. Yes, like my blinker, at times it’s hard to see. Join me in seeing people as God does.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20

12, 18, or 24

When I graduated from college, I ordered an eighteen-karat class ring. Yes, I wanted something a little nicer than my 12-karat high school ring. Do you know how many karats it takes to have pure gold? As believers we are to be pure as opposed to having the world in us. That means that we are to strive for righteousness, with out sin. Many times, I find myself mixing my thoughts and feelings in my attitude. That is like adding copper or another alloy to gold. The more we add, the less the karats.

Philippians 2:14-16 (NIV)

14 Do everything without complaining or arguing,

15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe

16 as you hold out the word of life--in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.

A Little Drip

The floor was wet on the wash room. Was it the hot water heater or the wash machine that was slowly flooding the room? Isn’t it amazing what a little drip can turn into? The little drip over time can have such an impact. You know where I am going. Either the hot water heater (the world), or the wash machine (the Kingdom); can make a big change by a constant drip. Will you be that constant in someone’s life for the Kingdom?

James 1:4 (NIV)

4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Philippians 2:13 (NIV)

13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

What Drives You?

How many times do we let escaped opportunities paralyze us? Or maybe the actions of others direct our paths. Do our circumstances dictate our actions? Paul was run out of many towns for preaching the gospel. But, he kept on preaching wherever he found himself. When he was thrown in prison, his attitude was not swayed by his circumstances. We need to live today for what God has for us, not worrying about what others think, say, or do. He is the God of not only today, but tomorrow.

Psalm 107:1 (NIV)

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

16 Be joyful always;

17 pray continually;

18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

A Word From God or A Word from Man?

Who do you listen to? Where do you go for advice?

Psalm 25:4-5 (NIV)

4 Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths;

5 guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Proverbs 3:5-7 (NIV)

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.

Get In The Boat

Recall after Jesus fed the 5,000, He ordered the disciples to get in the boat and cross over the Sea of Galilee? Did you notice that the disciples were where God wanted them and doing what He asked? In the midst of obedience, they faced a ferocious storm. Why are we surprised when we find ourselves in the same ”boat”? If we are where God called us to be, doing His will; keep going on the path and realize it is all about Him and His desires.

Matthew 14:22-27 (NIV)

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.

23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,

24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.

26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

Shelter-Where do you seek refuge?

Fortunately, we dodged Hurricane Laura this past week. However, our friends to the east saw the power of nature at their doorsteps and on their rooftops. Our house is a wonderful place of shelter until a category four hurricane comes to visit. It is at these times that we evacuate as our shelter may falter. In life, we face many challenging attacks. The place of refuge is in the hands of our Lord.

Psalm 119:114-116 (NIV)

114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.

115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!

116 Sustain me according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.

Guard Rails

Guard rails are put up along roadways to help keep is safe. Safe from what? Many times they keep us safe from dangers that are easily seen.

When we drive over those high over passes, because of the guard rails we are not afraid. They also keep us safe from those dangers that we may not see. When there is a drop off, a sharp turn or a cliff; they protect us.

When we see God as our guard rail, we will find protection. Remember to keep your eyes on Him.

You make your saving help my shield,

and your right hand sustains me;

your help has made me great.

You provide a broad path for my feet,

so that my ankles do not give way.

Ps 18:35 & 36

Teaching

School is starting soon if not already for the young people of today. With all that is happening around us, most students will have a major paradigm shift going to school. Instruction needs remain constant for young people. Pray for and encourage teachers as well as parents.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

[16] All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, [17] so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Proverbs 22:6

Start a youth out on his way; even when he grows old he will not depart from it.

Dusty

Have you seen the sign on dump trucks that say, “stay back 200 feet, not responsible for windshield damage”? Dusty , a good friend of mine, drove a dump truck. Not only did he have a great mind, a walking encyclopedia; but he was very considerate of others. He kept and used a broom in his truck. Before and after each load, he would not only sweep around the bed of the truck, but under the rails as well. He went the extra mile in trying to make sure loose materials would not fall off the truck as he drove. He was a worker that you could depend on. If things got tough, Dusty was there for you, standing by your side. As his eyesight began to fail and he was not able to drive, his boss kept him on the payroll because of the commitment Dusty had given to the company over the years. Yes, Dusty thought more about others and made sacrifices for the benefit of others. When our days of labor are over, what will others say of us?

2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)

15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV)

3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

No “I” in Team

Have you heard the expression, “There is no I in team”? To me it seems that this world in which we live is driven by what “I” want or don’t want. What seems best for “me” is the direction most people travel. The big topic of conversation today seems to be, to wear a mask or not. What are “our” rights? What is more comfortable for “me”? We could trade this topic with so many others. As a child of the King, we are to serve Him at all cost. What I would challenge you to ask is what better serves Him? How might I deny myself for the Kingdom sake? There is no self in Christian.

Matthew 16:24 (NIV)

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Galatians 2:20 (NIV)

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Matthew 22:37-39 (NIV)

37 Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'

38 This is the first and greatest commandment.

39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'

Timing

Have you heard the expression, “Timing is everything”? Ecclesiastes 3 states that there is a time for everything. The right timing on our cars, the missed opportunities because of bad timing. How many times have you missed out because of bad timing? Here are some other familiar sayings dealing with timing. “A day late and a dollar short”. “The early bird gets the worm”. “A sense of timing is the mark of a genius”. I believe the true mark of a smart person is finding one’s timing in the Lord.

31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Is 40:31

Stop Sign

How many times do we take our prayer life like we do approaching a stop sign? Do we roll up to God as we do a stop sign, then take off before the wheels of the car even stop?

When we come to God we need to come to a complete stop, we need to look to the left, to the right, then back to the left again to see what God has coming at us before we proceed. There are times when God wants to give us instructions to prepare us for oncoming traffic. Many times, we need to stop and pause at the stop sign instead of rushing through it in order to receive the blessing He has for us.

“Be still and know that I am God” - Psalms 46:10

“For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. “ Jer 29:11

Mask

Hiding salvation is worse than hiding that we are positive to COVID-19! The Devil’s desire is to hide salvation because he is evil, but a believer should proclaim salvation. Wearing masks today is to extend and save physical lives. Salvation that can save their spiritual life, so don’t mask the gospel. Remember, God knows our hearts.

1 Thessalonians 2:3-6 (NIV)

3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you.

4 On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.

5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed--God is our witness.

6 We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else. As apostles of Christ we could have been a burden to you.

Peddling

This morning I spotted a man riding his bike. What I thought was unusual about this sight was, that he was peddling so very slowly. I thought that if I were to ride that slow, I would fall over. While he was out riding, I was standing looking from a distance. He was going somewhere while I was standing still. This got me thinking about my Christian walk. Keep on peddling, regardless of the speed.

Galatians 6:9-10 (NIV)

9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

What Are You Going To Do Today?

My wife is good at telling me her plans for the week. However, each day I ask her what she is going to be doing that particular day. Many a time, she reminds me that she has already given me her agenda for the week. Two things I have learned over the years. First, I don’t always remember (or, it might be that I don’t listen well). And second, things come up that alter her plans. Like my wife, I too make plans in advance. Many times, I find that my plans are not the plans the Lord has for me. So, each morning it is best for me to check with my Lord and see what plans He has for me. Am I going to be about His task, sharing His glory to a lost and dying world, or will I lose that opportunity to praise Him?

Isaiah 12:5-6 (NIV)

5 Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world.

6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you."

It is amazing that sand can hold rocks together.

Mortar is used to hold building materials such as brick or stone together. It is composed of a thick mixture of water, sand, and cement. The water is used to hydrate the cement and hold the mix together.

There is an old song that Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote, What the World Needs Now is Love, that came to my mind this morning. With all that is going on in our world, we can be used by God to hold people together. Not for peace in the world, but peace in hearts. True Love is a gift from God that is available for all who might receive it. (and there is no shortage from the maker). If we will let the power of God and the direction of the Holy Spirit work in us (the sand), We can make a difference. Will we take time to share this wonderful gift?

Col 3:14

And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Thank You, Mike

Yesterday afternoon Karen and I had an opportunity to share God’s word and what He has done in our lives. Our prayer was that God would use our experience to draw people to Him. As we were in the parking lot leaving, Mike came up to us. I don’t think that I have ever met or seen Mike before. He went out of his way to thank us for what he heard. We were blessed by his encouragement. We never know who might be listening. We are just to lift the name of God up and proclaim His great truths. Who will over hear us today? Will they be drawn to the great and Holy One?

Isaiah 12:4-6 (NIV)

4 In that day you will say: "Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted.

5 Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world.

6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you."

A Pebble is a Stone

Whenever you get a pebble or even part of a pebble in your shoe, it can be painful. Little things can become a big deal when you walk on them daily. Many times, it’s the little things that create the biggest obstacles. Just try running a lap or two with a pebble in your shoe. Could your heart have little pebbles of stone that cause obstacles for the Kingdom?

Ezekiel 36:26 CSB

[26] I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
